Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do an admissions test?

It depends on your course and university. Medicine, Law, Engineering at Cambridge, and Maths at several Russell Group universities all require one.

Check your UCAS choices — if any of them list a test as a requirement, you have no choice. Don't find out after the deadline.

Which test do I need?

UCAT → Medicine & Dentistry.
LNAT → Law.
ESAT → Engineering & Science at Cambridge/Imperial.
TMUA → Maths, CS & Economics.
TARA → Academic Reasoning (Cambridge).
Some courses require more than one.

When should I start preparing?

At least 6–8 weeks before your test date. For UCAT, most successful candidates do 4–6 weeks of daily practice. Starting the week before is the most common mistake we see.

When do I register?

Registration opens in the summer before your application year — usually June/July. Missing the registration deadline means missing the test entirely. There are no exceptions.

How do I register?

For UCAT: register at ucat.ac.uk.
For LNAT: lnat.ac.uk.
For ESAT, TMUA & TARA: through UAT-UK at esat-tmua.ac.uk.
You'll need to create an account and book a test centre slot — popular slots fill up fast.

When do I sit the test?

Most tests are sat in September–October, before the UCAS deadline. Oxbridge applicants must sit in October. Some tests have a January sitting for non-Oxbridge applicants.

What score do I need?

Every university sets its own threshold and most don't publish them. As a benchmark: UCAT top quartile (roughly 670+) is competitive for most medical schools. LNAT 27+ out of 42 is a strong score. For ESAT and TMUA, a score above 6.0 puts you in a strong position.
